When Beautiful Trees Become Dangerous

Trees add shade, character, and value to a property, right up until one of them turns into a problem. And they rarely announce it ahead of time.
The hidden dangers property owners face:
E
Weakened trees leaning toward your home after storms
E
Dead branches hanging overhead like ticking time bombs
E
Overgrown limbs scraping your roof causing expensive damage
E
Diseased trees spreading to healthy ones nearby
E
Root systems compromising your foundation or utilities

Tree Work in Birmingham Since 1912

Evans Tree Service has been doing tree work in Birmingham since 1912. Three generations of removals, trimming, stump grinding, and storm cleanup across Jefferson and Shelby County, run today by Carl Hess and his sons.

We’re not the cheapest crew in town. We’re the one you call when the tree is close to the house and there’s no room to get it wrong.

Every removal is a different problem. The tree leans a certain way. There are power lines, or a fence, or a pool, or a neighbor’s garage six feet from where it’s going to fall. We work all of that out before anybody fires up a saw. Most of the job happens before the first cut.

The Trees We Work On Around Birmingham

Birmingham’s canopy runs heavy to water oak, pine, maple, and crepe myrtle, and the job changes with the tree and the lot it’s on. A storm-damaged limb in Forest Park isn’t the same job as an overgrown oak crowding a roofline in Mountain Brook, and neither one is a root problem pushing up against a foundation downtown.

We work Highland Park, Crestwood, Southside, Avondale, Bluff Park, Forest Park, and the neighborhoods around them, plus Homewood, Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills, Hoover, Trussville, Irondale, Gardendale, and Moody.

Serving Birmingham, Homewood, Mountain Brook, Hoover, Vestavia Hills & Irondale — quick local response.

Birmingham Tree Services

FAQ

Here are answers to common questions about our tree services in Birmingham.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Birmingham?

It depends on which city you’re actually in and whether you have an HOA. Birmingham, Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills, and Homewood don’t all handle it the same way, and HOA rules are frequently stricter than the city’s. Give us the address and we’ll tell you what applies before you schedule anything.

How much does tree removal cost in Birmingham?

There’s no honest flat answer, which is why we won’t quote one over the phone. Size matters less than people expect. A relatively small water oak in a tight backyard can cost more than a much bigger pine in an open field, and vice versa. Access, condition, and what’s underneath the tree drive the number more than height does. We wrote up the full breakdown here.

How often should trees be trimmed?

Most trees do fine on a two-to-three year cycle, but it varies by species, age, and what’s around them. A young tree near a roofline needs looking at more often than a mature oak in the middle of a yard.

A storm just came through and I have a tree down. What now?

Call us. If it’s on a structure or across power lines, keep everybody away from it and call the power company first. We do emergency removal and storm cleanup across the Birmingham metro.

Do you work with insurance after storm damage?

Yes. We’ll document the damage and the work with photos so you have what an adjuster is going to ask for. We can’t tell you what your policy covers, that’s between you and your carrier, but we can make sure the paperwork side isn’t the thing holding up your claim.

How fast can you get out here?

For an emergency, we move as fast as the schedule and the weather allow, and we’ll tell you honestly when that is rather than promise you a time we can’t hit. After a widespread storm, everybody in Birmingham is calling every tree service at once. For a normal estimate, usually same day.

Can you grind a stump in a tight space?

Usually. Our grinders get into narrow side yards and up against structures without damaging what’s around them. Send a photo and we’ll tell you before we come out.

Do you work year-round?

Yes. Removals and storm work happen in every season. Pruning and planting have better and worse windows, planting season is roughly October through February, and we’ll tell you if waiting a few months would give you a better result.
